From the opening of “Democracy and Freedom“, Bruce Walker, Canada Free Press, 29 March 2010:
We often confuse democracy with freedom. The greatest good of government is liberty — that is what our Declaration of Independence emphatically states. Simply implementing the “Will of the People” is no more noble, true, or decent than the will of a kind and wise autocrat: Democracy has no value at all, except to help keep us free.
This is a commonplace bit of impractical overstatement, typically said by people who’ve known only peace and prosperity. Freedom means nothing without good government. Bad government produces bad things such as defeat in war, bankruptcy, or internal chaos. People in societies that have experienced anarchy say “better a thousand years of tyranny than one day of anarchy.”
A short period of anarchy can burn to the ground what took generations to build.
