Racism is the dark side of populism. Will it divide & defeat us?

Summary: With the rise of populism comes racism, its dark side and America’s original sin, freely expressed as America has not seen since the 1960s. These are strange times, unless you remember our history. Then’s its the same old same old. Here are examples of this horrific but familiar phenomenon, and a possible way of coping with it.  {1st of 2 posts today.}

“Really, any society that has White identity at its core should be unanimously preferred over any of the alternatives we as a people have been forced to endure. ”
John Heckathorn, at the “Traditional Right” website, 18 February 2016. This is the traditional Right in America, but they haven’t been so candid about it since the 1960s.

An increasingly typical event at at Trump rally

U.S. UnCut describes the video (link no longer works).

In the video, several young black men are protesting nonviolently during Trump’s speech. The men are near the back of the Crown Coliseum, surrounded by white Trump supporters. One of the young protesters is seen shouting back at the rally attendees, who are yelling at them and making rude gestures.

As the exchange becomes more heated, several tan-shirted private security officers show up to escort the protesters away from the event. The protesters quickly acquiesce and being walking calmly toward the exit. Then, one Trump supporter walks to the end of the row, waits for his opportunity, and swiftly sucker punches one of the protesters in the face.

But rather than arrest the violent Trump supporter, security guards tackled the young man who was punched and knock him to the ground. Not one security officer attempts to even confront the Trump supporter who threw the punch, despite several witnessing the full encounter clearly. …

Sadly, these kinds of assaults and hateful acts are all too common at Donald Trump rallies. In addition to his hateful rhetoric, he has inspired these kinds of violent attacks at many of his rallies, including incidents in Alabama, in Kentucky, and elsewhere, even telling his supporters to steal the coat of one protester as they were being pushed into a freezing night.

Update: a 78-year old man was arrested for this assault. The 26-year old victim was not injured. See the story at WRAL, which says …

“A press release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said several deputies did not see the attack happen. …but cell phone video of the incident that was posted online led to an investigation and arrest.” We went to work immediately to identify this man, and we did this morning,” said Sheriff Earl “Moose” Butler.”

So despite the curiously blind deputies (a man they’re escorting is punched), yet again a cell phone video leads to justice. See more details at Slate.

A typical article at Chateau Heartiste

It’s a website about “game” (advice for men about women), but increasingly often talks about other aspects of life.

This is a great time to be alive. The GOPe {sic} is about to implode. The Dems are turning into a sop party for third world ingrates. Shitlords are tearing up the anti-White Narrative and replacing it with Realtalk so violently unsparing that we may bear witness to fatties and freaks on tumblrrhea mass suiciding. Ross Douthat furrows his fivehead and cries, “O tempura O mores! Wherefore gentility! This vulgarian dares speak for the people??” And a Travis County GOP Chairman unapologetically proclaims his love of big titties.

The cause of all this hope and change is existential fear and the survival instinct kicking in. White people all over the country feel their numbers dwindling. It’s subconscious for some, keen awareness for others. Slow, genocidal dispossession from one’s homeland and nation that one’s ancestors built has a way of wonderfully focusing minds. The Trumpening has unleashed celestial forces beyond the control of the Inner Party equalist leftoids. White men are finding their balls, and the earth is about to rend.

Conclusions

These are just snapshots of the rising tide of racism — unabashed, proud racism.

People under stress without hope for the future — for them and their children — will identify and find leaders who offer hope. Populism traditionally does in for America; racism is its dark side. Condemning them and calling them racists is the equivalent of a witch doctor treating cancer with dances and rattles.

These people will ally with another movement. Since the 1960’s they have allied with the Right, and that majority has reshaped America. Trump, and the probably more successful populist leaders that follow, might revitalize that coalition for the 21st century.

Progressivism can offer a more positive and effective alliance, channeling populists’ anger and resentment into policies that build a stronger America — as their combination did in the New Deal. Racism is not an inherent barrier between the two movements. Progressives were once just as racist (e.g, President Wilson, and eugenics)., but overcame it. They can help others to do so.

Winning requires that the Left forgo the pleasures of righteous indignation and instead to listen and understand, seeing themselves as partners of their fellow Americans — not their priests, teachers, and leaders.

Much depends on how these forces play out during the next few elections.

Advice from Ben Franklin, the Founders’ sage (1751)

Those darn tawny and swarthy races crowding into America, bringing their inferior foreign ways! A problem even in the beginning with the … Germans. Racism is America’s original sin.

From Observations Concerning the Increase of Mankind, Peopling of Countries

Which leads me to add one Remark: That the Number of purely white People in the World is proportionably very small. All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth.I could wish their Numbers were increased.

And while we are, as I may call it, Scouring our Planet, by clearing America of Woods, and so making this Side of our Globe reflect a brighter Light to the Eyes of Inhabitants in Mars or Venus, why should we in the Sight of Superior Beings, darken its People? …where we have so fair an Opportunity, by excluding all Blacks and Tawneys, of increasing the lovely White and Red?

But perhaps I am partial to the Complexion of my Country, for such Kind of Partiality is natural to Mankind.

… why should the Palatine Boors {Germans} be suffered to swarm into our settlements, and by herding together establish their languages and manners to the exclusion of ours? Why should Pennsylvania, founded by the English, become a colony of Aliens, who will shortly be so numerous as to Germanize us instead of our Anglifying them, and will never adopt our language or customs, any more than they can acquire our complexion?

  1. That “Traditional Right” site you quoted is far from mainstream. They’re members of the “Alternative Right” scene, along with a lot of other, equally-vile sites, to include Heartiste, Return of Kings, VDare, MoreRight, and others. They’ve all been openly and loudly racist in blogs and social media for years, though they seem to have been recently rejuvenated by “GamerGate” and the rise of Trump.

It’s curious because, if you took away the racism and bluster, Trump would look like any other “prog” politician that they usually despise. Most of them, in addition to being racist, are also anti-democracy and want some form of authoritarian rule, either by anointing some Silicon Valley elite as the “CEO of America” or restoring monarchy or some other fanciful daydream. Far from populists, they (along with their kooky cousins, the Rand- and Rothbard-inspired “anarcho-capitalists”) seem to be the party that advocates for surrendering to the 1% and just letting them have everything without a fight.

Some “journalists” like Charles C. Johnson and some of the clowns at Breitbart have been trying to push alt-right ideas into the mainstream…but we’re still pretty far from open race-hate becoming socially-acceptable speech again.

    1. ch1kpee,

“That “Traditional Right” site you quoted is far from mainstream”

Yes. What’s your point? They’re clearly becoming more open, with a larger following. As we see in the openly racist statements in the GOP primaries (not just presidential). I suggest worrying before they become mainstream.

“from open race-hate becoming socially-acceptable speech again.”

      We’re already there.

“if you took away the racism and bluster, Trump would look like any other “prog” politician that they usually despise”

Yes, there is an overlap between populism and progressivism. There are overlaps between all the major schools of American politics, which is why they ally in different mixes. Your description is, however, an exaggeration. To mention one of many differences: Trump’s position on taxes — massive tax cuts for the rich — is an anathema to progressives.

  2. On the last point, you misunderstand. The alt-right crazies consider anyone who isn’t of their ilk (returning to society to some kind of autocratic, white-supremacist pre-Enlightenment form) a “prog.” To them, even the most hardcore conservative Republican is a pinko in disguise who wants to kill the white race and force us all to be multicultural atheist communists. That’s why I find it funny that they get so excited over a populist candidate like Trump. It’s obviously because he’s the only viable candidate that speaks to their hatreds and fears.

    1. ch1kpee,

      Thanks for the explanation!

I suggest not underestimating the growing influence of these racist voices on the Right. History shows that these things spread like a disease (which they are, in a sense). Note that William Lind writes at Traditional Right.

  3. “… seeing themselves as partners of their fellow Americans…”

Why does that sound so far far away? And so absolutely necessary in fact. How is it that feeling superior to someone, maybe anyone, is seen as one of the joys, hidden deeply perhaps, of Life.

Terrific post. Video and description were simply chilling. At least some perp was finally arrested.

    Times of Opportunity? Oh yes.

    1. Breton,

      Thanks for the feedback.

I have a reliable guide to the quality of a post: it’s pageviews. This has gotten 294 by 7pm EST, what a popular post has by 6Am. People avoid clicking on it as if it gives AIDS. Must be a good, perhaps important, post. After 3,600 posts I’ve found this metric is an almost infallible guide.

  4. Yes, good and surely an important Post. Very close to the hidden unspeakable.
    …as if it gives AIDS”
    Sigh…yes.
    Keep going, sir. Please.

  5. Trump’s populism is not racist. Of course, because of the promise to defend borders against uncontrolled mass immigration, Trump’s platform is popular with racists, but that does not make the platform itself racist. It doesn’t even make that specific policy racist. Nor does it make Trump or most of his supporters racist.

As for the incidents portrayed as racist in the media (such as the old white guy who punched a Black Lives Matter protester), even they’re not definitely racist. Was race a factor in that incident, of did the white guy just hate the protester for being a protester? Protesters are often a very obnoxious lot, after all, and that is by design. The whole point of going to a large event held by your political enemies, getting into the midst of the crowd, and then starting up a disruptive protest, is hopefully to provoke a newsworthy incident. Mission, in that particular case, accomplished.

  6. PS: To merely provoke a newsworthy incident is only part of the goal; the goal is only really accomplished if the media is distracted from reporting the message that the event was trying to deliver, and more fully accomplished if the media then goes on to portray the incident as if the event and its host are to blame for the incident, rather than the real culprit, namely, the disruptive protester. The jackpot is won when protests cause an event to be cancelled. This is a standard tactic of the fanatical left that has been practised and refined over the course of about a century. It is an outright attack on free speech, since the ultimate goal is to prevent political opponents from getting their message across at all.
