Edgewood College attacks free speech. We laugh, ignoring its lessons for us all

Summary: Small incidents show the evolution of America. Pay attention, for these trends can be more easily stopped in their early days. See a new confrontation at Edgewood College. The reports about it are mostly mockery. More fools they. It has lessons for both Left and Right, showing the Left in action and illustrating one reason why Americans voted for Trump.

This graphic captures the hidden agenda of the Hate Crime fighters.

The Campus Reform website reports an amazing incident at Edgewood College, a private liberal arts college in Madison, Wisconsin run according to the Dominican tradition. Just we can see Niagara Falls by study of a water droplet, a tiny incident in a small college reveals how America is changing.

Email by Tony Chambers, Vice President for Student Development
to the Edgewood College Community. Links added.

“…Last week our college was violated by an act of cowardly hatred. One of our students initiated a process by which students (…and others) could express their feelings about the election outcome by writing their feelings on sticky notes and placing them on a table located in Wingra Commons. Many intense emotions were shared on the sticky notes representing various perspectives. From a review of the responses, this attempt at providing an avenue for sharing appeared to be a success.

“Unfortunately in a targeted act of intimidation and cowardice this past weekend, someone choose to post a sticky note on the inside window at the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion (OSDI) in Predolin Hall. A great deal of fear, sadness, and anger among students, faculty, and staff resulted — especially for those that gather in the OSDI space. The message was hateful and harmful against members of our community. It violated every value that this institution considers to be at its core.

“A group of cross-functional staff representing campus security, student conduct, human resources, Title IX enforcement, and diversity and inclusion measures convened Tuesday morning to discuss how to address the hateful message. The group determined that the message constituted a Hate Crime, based on guidelines from the Jeanne Clery Act and state law. In accordance with the policies and procedures set forth in the Edgewood College Code of Conduct, this incident has been reported to the Madison Police Department and is being investigated as a Hate Crime. Further, the act will be reported through our institution’s Cleary Act reporting obligation and is also being investigated through the College’s Student Conduct Process.

“We are asking anyone who may have information about this or any other incident to contact one of the following campus offices…”

Here is the act of “cowardly hatred”, a pink post-it note that
“violated every value that this institution considers to be at its core.”

Lessons learned

While trivial, such incidents are rich with insights about society. The big moments that go into the history books are preceded and created by years of small changes. Attention to these allows us to act and prevent those big moments.

(1)  This sticky-note is agitprop, a pebble producing a landslide response by the establishment that shows their absurdity. It is highly effective agitprop in terms of large response to the small effort — and the resulting national publicity. Congratulations to him or her (probably him) are due.

(2)  College bureaucrats love such pranks (except for campus security, for whom this was a diversion from real work). It gave them something to do — many meetings! — keeping them busy for the next week. They live for these incidents.

(3)  Note the call for snitches, the bulwark of tyranny.

(4)  Do not mock their response. They invoke actual laws against Hate Crimes, which set in motion the full power of the modern State. This brave person faces serious penalties if caught. The College can revoke scholarships, suspend or expel. The State can prosecute, which imposes severe financial costs and the risk of a career-ending felony conviction (prosecutors ability to pile on and inflate charges is a power weapon forcing plea bargains).

(5)  This incident shows the Left’s increasingly hysterical response to Trump’s election – and their obliviousness to their contribution. Under a Hillary administration her social justice warriors would normalize this suppression of free speech. Bold action by Leftists — including protests blocking traffic and stopping construction — would be applauded. Speech and demonstrations against leftist programs would be Hate Crimes, with the full power of the government used against them. For more detail see Clinton lost because fear failed, and voters disliked her Social Justice Warriors.

(6)  These incidents show how Americans have become domesticated, like sheep. Contrast this with the 1960s, when we were wild and untamed. Compare these incidents with the Berkeley Free Speech Movement.

This is the incipient stage of tyranny. Trivial, much like the light bump of a shark in the water. Much depends on our response. Our apathy and passivity will bring more powerful forces out against us.

Confirming the story

At the Washington Post Eugene Volokh (Prof of Law, UCLA) contacted Edgewood about this news. He received this email (but does not say from whom at the College)…

“I can confirm that the image is a rendering of the email that Dr. Chambers sent to students, faculty and staff. We have nothing to add in this matter.”

SJWs Always Lie: Taking Down the Thought Police
by Vox Day.

“…{T}his book is not a polemic against the thought police or an indictment of liberal politics. Even if your politics are to the left of Vox Day’s (and whose aren’t?), you’ll learn potentially career-saving information, as SJWs Always Lie is a how-to book. In SJWs Always Lie you’ll learn how to defend yourself against the thought police. Chapter 7 – What to Do When SJWS Attack – was my favorite.” (Review by Mike Cernovich.)

From his Amazon page: “{Vox Day} is a platinum-selling game designer who speaks four languages and a three-time Billboard Top 40 Club Play recording artist. His books have been translated into 10 languages. He maintains a pair of popular blogs, Vox Popoli and Alpha Game {both alt-Right advocacy}, which between them average over 3.2 million pageviews per month. He is an American Indian, the Supreme Dark Lord of the Evil Legion of Evil, and the leader of the Rabid Puppies. The Wall Street Journal described him as “the most despised man in science fiction.”
